Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
How do I use my chip card at the store?
Using a chip card is a little different than just swiping your card like you had been doing.
- Insert your card (chip side first) into the slot in the payment terminal, but DO NOT REMOVE your card.
- Follow the prompts on the terminal and complete any required actions. You may enter your PIN or sign for your purchase, just like you do now.
- Remove your card from the slot and return it to your wallet.
How do I use my chip card online?
Using a chip card for online purchases is done the same as it is now with a magnetic stripe card. Simply enter the card number, expiration, and billing details when prompted by the website.
How do I use my chip card at the ATM?
Most ATMs do not yet have chip readers. Simply insert your card into the magnetic stripe reader as you usually do. Then enter your PIN and follow the on-screen prompts to check your balance or withdraw cash.
If the ATM does have a chip reader, insert your card (chip side first) into the reader slot, but DO NOT REMOVE your card. Then enter your PIN and follow the on-screen prompts to check your balance or withdraw cash. When finished, remove your card from the slot and return it to your wallet.
Will my card no longer have a magnetic stripe?
Your card will have both a chip and a magnetic stripe. Full roll-out of chip or EMV card acceptance in the U.S. will take a long time. Thousands of merchants currently have payment terminals and card readers designed to read only magnetic stripe cards, but these machines will eventually be replaced by chip card readers.
